Mentoring memories

I’m an SL mentor.  I can only say for a little while longer as Linden Labs, in their infinite wisdom have decided to disband the group.  If you’ve never heard of Second Life mentors they are volunteers who choose to spend some (or all) of their time in Second Life helping others – mostly new residents who arrive fresh onto a Help Island full of queries and questions.  I have to be honest and say I haven’t been the most productive mentor.  I’ve spent some Sunday afternoons on Help Islands and one memorable day in November 2008  when cries went out for all hands to the pump and I spent a solid 8 hours gently explaining that there were other activities in Second Life besides sex after some rather undesirable media attention when SL was flooded with the curious!   I consider myself to have been a very junior member of this prestigious group and I take my hat off to the dedication and many hours they have given to helping new people and really making a difference.

Drakon Cortes had the great idea to immortalise the mentor group by putting aside a space to display the ‘Superstars’ we were given some time ago.  These are just some of the stars.

Yesterday was the last official day for Second Life Mentors but life goes on and several groups are set to continue this good work, via gateways and other venues.   Mentors are dead!  Long live the Mentors!
